Transformers - Crazy mountainbikes change แปลงร่างเสือภูเขา

It's time to say goodbye to my over two-year-old 6061 aluminium mountainbike Merida TFS 500 XC. It has served me well on my recreational and exercising purposes - including my crazy bike-to-work effort - during the recent past.

However, when the Jamis Dragon Team Reynolds 853 chromoly mtb frame showed up on the horizon I had to grab it fast since I have long yearned for my stable to consist of ALL steel bikes - because, after all, ''Steel is real'' is always true to its sense even to the most stubborn alu-frame lovers.

Here comes the Reynolds 853 Jamis Dragon Team. Goodbye the Merida alu frame - most of its components have been transformed to take hold of the chromoly Jamis Dragon. I admit that the 6061 frame would be missed sometimes since at least it had clocked steadfastly nearly 9,000km under me.

My new Thorn Sherpa frameset from Somerset, England, arrives in Bangkok at this time that I'm very busy. I'm not very certain when it'd be fully completed with proper equipment.

It might be here to stay idle for a while. I have initially considered the Sherpa's components to comprise those fit for the expeditionary type of cycling; not like the LHT -- despite its name to suggest hauling heavy cargo.

Thorn Cycles เป็นบริษัทเล็กๆในอังกฤษ เชี่ยวชาญการผลิตจักรยานทั่วริ่งและจักรยานสองตอน ในแวดวงฝรั่ง มีสาวกผู้ใช้และติดตามอยู่ไม่น้อยเหมือนกัน จักรยานท่องเที่ยวเดินทางมีทั้งที่ใช้ล้อ 700c และ 26นิ้ว ทั้งที่ใช้เกียร์ดุม Rohloff และใช้ตีนผี

ธอร์น ไซเคิลส์ อังกฤษ ค่อนข้างภูมิใจกับสูตรท่อโลหะโครโมลี่ของตนเอง คือ Thorn 969 ซึ่งความจริงก็คือ โลหะสูตร 4130 ที่ใช้สร้างท่อจักรยานระดับคุณภาพของ "ชาวเหล็กไหล" อีกหลายๆ บริษัท กล่าวกันว่า 969 หมายถึงสูตรการรีดท่อให้ได้ 0.9---0.6---0.9มม. ปลายท่อ-กลาง-ปลาย ทุกท่อของจักรยาน เพื่อให้ได้ความแข็งแรงและลดน้ำหนัก แต่คิดว่าใครๆเขาก็ทำอย่างนี้กันทั้งนั้น ที่เรียกว่า butted นั่นเอง แต่ที่เขากล่าวอวดมากน่าจะเป็น heat-treated, cold-drawn process เราก็ไม่รู้ว่ามันดียังไง แต่ Thorn อวดว่า มันยาก ให้คุณภาพดี และไม่ค่อยมีใครทำแบบนี้ เพราะมันแพง ส่วนตะเกียบของ Sherpa เป็นโลหะของ Reynolds 531 มีตราแจ้งไว้อย่างนั้น เป็นโครโมเกรดสูงอีกสูตรหนึ่ง

Thorn Sherpa ล้อ 26 พัฒนามาจาก Thorn Nomad ที่มีชื่อเสียงมาตั้งแต่ปี 1996 มีขนาดให้เลือกย่อยลงไปตามขนาดร่างกายและความถนัดของผู้ใช้ การสั่งจักรยาน complete bike เป็นเรื่องยุ่งนิดหน่อย เพราะ Thorn Cycles จะขอให้ผู้สั่งวัดอะไรต่างๆให้ดี เพื่อป้องกันการผิดพลาดจากเรื่องขนาดและความถนัด

คันนี้คือ Thorn Nomad ในอดีต เมื่อไม่นานนัก


ที่สุดยอดของจักรยาน Thorn ล้อ 26 นิ้ว คือ Thorn eXp ซึ่งเป็นจักรยานสร้างแบบตามสั่ง หรือ custom made bike ธอร์น คงจะจัด eXp ให้เป็นตัว top-of-the-line ในบรรดาพวก 26 นิ้ว มีทั้งใช้ตีนผีและ เกียร์ดุม Rohloff และราคาของ eXp ก็น่าจะสูงกว่า Sherpa มากกว่าสองหรือสามเท่า เหมาะสำหรับผู้ใช้งานระดับ world touring นั่นหละครับ

My crazy bikes -- Trek 520, Surly Long Haul Trucker - จักรยานคู่กาย เพื่อตระเวณไปตามใจฝัน

Trek 520 year 2009. size 54, a complete bike. No upgrading yet at this time. This bike is intended for long road travelling trips - under careful planning - which I still don't know when they would come to realise.


The Surly Long Haul Trucker size 52 Truckaccino has already clocked over 3,500km by February 2010, mostly on day-trips and my crazy bike-to-work effort. However, its components were not intended for heavy loading.

This time it's really a scary, crazy short trip -- into the jungle.

The sanctuary is part of Thailand's greater Western Forest expanse. The trip happens one fine day's afternoon in the midst of a scorching sun.

Lan Sak is a district on the western side of Uthai Thani province. It has a tiny business enclave sitting on a country road which snakes through rolling hills to nowhere. Nobody would ever dream of messing around here except those who'd have something to do with forests or agricultural produce.
No other vehicles are in sight that afternoon and it's quite scary.

The sign says ''Beware of Elephants'' and that's more scary.

The LHT and rider make a stop at probably the wildlife sanctuary's perimeter. The boundary stone proclaims the forest's World Heritage status; that's something as a result of UNESCO's and Thai officials' mutual efforts.
Across the road from the stone, a sign reads: "Wild elephant tracks". That injects deep fear into our heads: No jumbos, please.
The lonely laterite road stretches ahead with nothing to be seen except hilly terrain including big and small trees. Some wildlife species - a few barking deer - dash swiftly in front of our path twice.
We arrive at the destination after almost 50km of cycling from the start. A suspension bridge leading to the sanctuary office spans a shallow creek that meanders through this part of the forest.

Most visitors are here to have good time with natural surrounding and visit Sueb Nagasathiara foundation and memorial. Sueb was a forest official who sacrificed himself in the determination to protect Thailand's Western Forest from destruction by human's greedy activities as well as negligence allegedly on the part of officials in high places .
Sueb's memorial stands out at a corner of the area.
He faces west - as if to be watching permanently over his beloved Western Forest expanse and its wildlife.

The LHT mingles with a herd of barking deer coming down from the forest to graze amongst the sanctuary office's green grass field. This might be a secret of how the sanctuary office's huge lawn is always well manicured.
Some of those regular visitors are tagged with gadgets - maybe for data collection.

We depart the wildlife sanctuary late in the afternoon. A group of visitors leaves by a SUV.
The last stop of the day is at Thap Salao reservoir, a catchment of Huay Khakhaeng forest's runoff.
