'Red Thorn' Sherpa comes to life

After some delay owing partly to my laziness, procrastination, etc., the Thorn Sherpa frameset from Somerset, England, eventually comes to life. The latest build adds to the all-chromoly, ''Steel is Real'' stable in my crazy quest for bike use and cycling enthusiasm -- leisure, travelling, exercising and the usual crazy bike-to-work commuting. This latest stable member was properly christened "Red Thorn" apparently to conform with its physical character. But in our native Thai vernacular "Thorn" is rarely a proper noun and rather means more commonly like the Brits would mention about the thing "in your side".

A genuine leather "honey" Brooks Champion Flyer saddle is installed after a lengthy period of "curing and ageing" the material by way of "unweighted treatment" prior to the real "breaking-in" process on the bike naturally with a biker's weight. I've read countless narrative accounts from those who have vast experience in "maturing" the Brooks but I couldn't remember anybody who has done something like this crazy "nurturing" process: coating it with the Brooks Proofide leather dressing -- heavily on the underside, lightly on the outside skin, sunbathing the saddle on both sides for a few hours a day then rubbing and massaging the outer skin with microfibre fabric or fine-filament cloth each day (I used the one commonly utilised in jewellery polishing). Applying massage strength invariably all over the finished outer skin, I repeated the process religiously time and again, day in and day out, when I'm not biking, working or having nothing else to do. (Maybe I tended to this particular saddle overzealously with these steps too many times. However, I didn't dare to go so far as some Brooks enthusiasts as to boil the saddle in neatfoot's oil, bake it in a baker's oven or burn it with spotlights, charcoal, or dip it in some strange, untrustworthy substance, etc. No, no.)

The double-stem, trekking handle-bar set is donated from its cousin in the stable -- Surly Long Haul Trucker, who turns to use a touring drop bar with 9sp bar-end shifters.

The heavy-set "Red Thorn" Sherpa is proud to be installed with super-light bike part bits -- some carbon spacers in the headset.

A Shimano Deore SLX 9-speed drivetrain set is installed for the Sherpa.

The Sherpa frameset doesn't embrace some universal accessories wholeheartedly as I earlier expected. It takes me hours of tweaking, squeezing and forceful adjusting to fit in a pair of German-made SKS mudguards including a French-made Zefal rear bike pannier rack. The SKS mudguard itself seems to be a good quality product with a proper design to fit most bikes in general but it comes with a horrible, brief and terse installation manual that I think would confuse even bike mechanics who are not familiar with the proprietary installation system. Maybe good only to German "bike engineers".

I found out from my LBS mechanic that the frameset had no problems in the assembly of all major equipment. I did the rest of the fitting for other optional accessories myself. Apart from the painstaking installation of the mudguards and rear pannier rack described above, during the fitting of water bottle cages one of the screw sockets needed a kind of soft "retapping" of the screw threads because of a thicker-than-usual paint layer clogging the socket threads (unseen from outside). A minor hurdle.

I could say that I'm now a proud owner of a Thorn Sherpa touring bike ready for many purposes from leisure, road travelling to expedition trekking. This might be the first Thorn Sherpa frameset hailing from Somerset, England, to be assembled as a complete bike in Bangkok, Thailand. I'm very much happy with the setup, sizing, fitting and everything -- all appear to be correct. Following an initial round-the-block test ride, the "Red Thorn" Sherpa has already shown promises that it should turn out to be one of the top travelling companions of mine; and hopefully it wouldn't become anything like a Thorn "in my side".

A full-scale test ride would be done in a near future.

LHT's crazy about naval ships

On a cloudy day during one of the LHT's crazy bike-to-work commuting trips we come upon two visitors on their goodwill visit to Thailand.

After a little rest from crazy spinning and heavy panting we take a close look on two of Thailand's mighty guests who have just arrived along the sea lane.

I guess not many in Thailand realise that our neighbour India ranks the world's fifth largest naval power in terms of personnel and equipment.

Yeah. Ship ahoy, Indian sailors!
Welcome to the Land of Smiles.

The Indian Navy's guided missile destroyer INS Ranjit and guided missile corvette INS Kulish are making a port call at Bangkok as part of their eastward deployment, according to Indian Navy officials.

The ships -- part of the Indian Navy's larger expeditionary eastern fleet on active duty -- have undertaken passage exercises with the navies of various countries including Indonesia, Australia and Singapore, the Indian officials say.

The naval vessels, sailing under Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral P.N. Murugesan, are scheduled to return to Indian waters by mid-June.

The ships have earlier made port calls at Haiphong in Vietnam, Manila in the Philippines, Muara in Brunei and Fremantle in Australia. They will also visit Singapore and Port Kelang in Malaysia on their way home, the officials explain.

Here are photos of the LHT making a visit to our guest naval ships from the Subcontinent.

A nostalgic visit to my old crazy playground

A trip one glummy afternoon with the LHT to Kasetsart University in Bangkhen, on the northern side of Bangkok about 25km from where I live, triggers serious nostalgia in my thought. This area was once a familiar surrounding in my life for many years.

More photos to come.

Is Bangkok burning?

Is Bangkok burning?

They say 'tis the Land of Smiles

They say democracy's bright and shine
They say City of Angel's in full bloom

Deniers are all but condemned for doom

Peasants plead to vote for their leaders

Elites claim to be automatic rulers

Outbackers voice 'tis not democracy

Towners insist that the case must be

So . . . here comes a crowd with firecrackers

Elite oligarch responds with sure-shot snipers

Tanks, troops pour into street with ablazin' guns

Boomtown massacre starts as thousands run

Anarchy rules amidst tyre blazes, torch of wood

Crude missiles outgunned by cold-blooded shoots

All around: shrieks, screams, fleeing, dead and dying

What happens to my town? Is Bangkok burning?

Transformers - Crazy mountainbikes change

It's time to say goodbye to my over two-year-old 6061 aluminium mountainbike Merida TFS 500 XC. It has served me well on my recreational and exercising purposes - including my crazy bike-to-work effort - during the recent past.

However, when the Jamis Dragon Team Reynolds 853 chromoly mtb frame showed up on the horizon I had to grab it fast since I have long yearned for my stable to consist of ALL steel bikes - because, after all, ''Steel is real'' is always true to its sense even to the most stubborn alu-frame lovers.

Here comes the Reynolds 853 Jamis Dragon Team. Goodbye the Merida alu frame - most of its components have been transformed to take hold of the chromoly Jamis Dragon. I admit that the 6061 frame would be missed sometimes since at least it had clocked steadfastly nearly 9,000km under me.

The Thorn Sherpa is here to stay

My new Thorn Sherpa frameset from Somerset, England, arrives in Bangkok at this time that I'm very busy. I'm not very certain when it'd be fully completed with proper equipment.

It might be here to stay idle for a while. I have initially considered the Sherpa's components to comprise those fit for the expeditionary type of cycling; not like the LHT -- despite its name to suggest hauling heavy cargo.

A Thorn Sherpa frameset image from the website of sjscycles, Somerset, England.
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category-Thorn-Sherpa-Frames-664.htm
This image is of a larger size, maybe 560 xl

When the assembly is accomplished, my Sherpa will hopefully resemble one of these bikes below.

My crazy bikes -- Trek 520, Surly Long Haul Trucker -

Trek 520 year 2009. size 54, a complete bike. No upgrading yet at this time. This bike is intended for long road travelling trips - under careful planning - which I still don't know when they would come to realise.

The Surly Long Haul Trucker size 52 Truckaccino has already clocked over 3,500km by February 2010, mostly on day-trips and my crazy bike-to-work effort. However, its components were not intended for heavy loading.

LHT's crazy trekking into the wild -

This time it's really a scary, crazy short trip -- into the jungle.
Wildlife Sanctuary at Huay Kha Khaeng forest reserve.

The sanctuary is part of Thailand's greater Western Forest expanse. The trip happens one fine day's afternoon in the midst of a scorching sun.

Lan Sak is a district on the western side of Uthai Thani province. It has a tiny business enclave sitting on a country road which snakes through rolling hills to nowhere. Nobody would ever dream of messing around here except those who'd have something to do with forests or agricultural produce.
No other vehicles are in sight that afternoon and it's quite scary.

The sign says ''Beware of Elephants'' and that's more scary.

The LHT and rider make a stop at probably the wildlife sanctuary's perimeter. The boundary stone proclaims the forest's World Heritage status; that's something as a result of UNESCO's and Thai officials' mutual efforts.
Across the road from the stone, a sign reads: "Wild elephant tracks". That injects deep fear into our heads: No jumbos, please.
The lonely laterite road stretches ahead with nothing to be seen except hilly terrain including big and small trees. Some wildlife species - a few barking deer - dash swiftly in front of our path twice.
We arrive at the destination after almost 50km of cycling from the start. A suspension bridge leading to the sanctuary office spans a shallow creek that meanders through this part of the forest.
The well manicured green field and trees around the office premises.
Most visitors are here to have good time with natural surrounding and visit Sueb Nagasathiara foundation and memorial. Sueb was a forest official who sacrificed himself in the determination to protect Thailand's Western Forest from destruction by human's greedy activities as well as negligence allegedly on the part of officials in high places .
Sueb's memorial stands out at a corner of the area.
He faces west - as if to be watching permanently over his beloved Western Forest expanse and its wildlife.
The old house where he used to live and work; the place where he died.
The LHT mingles with a herd of barking deer coming down from the forest to graze amongst the sanctuary office's green grass field. This might be a secret of how the sanctuary office's huge lawn is always well manicured.
Some of those regular visitors are tagged with gadgets - maybe for data collection.
The stream running through the thick forest.
We depart the wildlife sanctuary late in the afternoon. A group of visitors leaves by a SUV.
The last stop of the day is at Thap Salao reservoir, a catchment of Huay Khakhaeng forest's runoff.
